Gabriele Henkel

Gabriele Henkel , b. Hünermann (born December 9, 1931 in Düsseldorf ; † September 28, 2017 there ), was a German art collector, art patron, author and artist. She was married to Konrad Henkel , the long-time boss of the Henkel Group .

Gabriele Hünermann, married Henkel, was the daughter of Theodor Hünermann (1893–1979), since September 1929 lecturer in ear, nose and throat medicine at the Medical Academy in Düsseldorf, from September 1936 professor and head physician in the ENT department at Marien Hospital In Dusseldorf. After a hard war childhood without schooling, her father sent her to London to be an au pair at the age of 16 . She then worked as a journalist for the weekly magazines The Observer and Newsweek and was the youngest member of the federal press conference when she met Konrad Henkel at the Carnival in the Rhineland . The couple married in 1955, taking her husband's last name.

From 1970 to 2000 she collected art from all over the world for the Henkel company , thereby building up the group's art collection. The plants are located in the offices, meeting rooms and staff canteens at the company's headquarters in Düsseldorf. The collection includes around 4000 works.

Since 1972 she was a member of the International Advisory Board of the Museum of Modern Art in New York .

In 1983, through Bazon Brock , she received a teaching position for art history at the comprehensive university in Wuppertal . There she became an honorary professor for communication design.

In 2001 she founded the Kythera Cultural Foundation, which has awarded the Kythera Prize annually since 2002 .

Gabriele Henkel was the recipient of the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 2009 she was honored with the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia for her commitment to art and art education.

In 2016 she exhibited 40 outstanding pieces from the collection of classic modern and contemporary art for the first time outside the company in the Düsseldorf art collection K 20 .

In August 2017 she published her memoir under the title Time is a Moment . On September 28, 2017, an exhibition with works by Gabriele Henkel was opened in the Hetjens Museum in Düsseldorf . She played a decisive role in the design. She was not present during the vernissage, she died the following night at the age of 85.

Konrad and Gabriele Henkel are the parents of Christoph Henkel . Her sister was the gallery owner Hete Hünermann (1939–2001).
