General
The Galatea is the second ship with this name for Trinity House. The first Galatea was a paddle steamer built in 1868 , which was in service as a buoy laying , lighthouse tender and supervisory ship until 1895 . During this period the ship was involved in the commissioning of the Eddystone lighthouse and, in 1894, in the handover of the Helgoland lighthouse to the German Empire .
Today's Galatea was commissioned on March 11, 2004, together with the sister ship Pharos , from Remontowa in Gdansk . The hull of the new building was built on the belonging to Remontowa Northern Shipyard and ran on 26 July 2006 from the stack . The ship was christened on October 17, 2007 by the British Queen Elizabeth II . During the ceremony, the ship was alongside HMS Belfast . The home port of the Galatea is London , is stationed them but in Harwich , the headquarters of Trinity House. It replaced the Mermaid ( IMO 8511275) built in 1987 .
Furnishing
The Galatea has a diesel-electric drive consisting of five Wärtsilä - diesel generators (3 x 1368 kW, 2 × 684 kW), two Rolls-Royce - azimuth thruster each to 1500 kW and two cross beam control systems , each with 750 kW.
A large working deck with a ship's crane , a helicopter landing pad on the foredeck , parking spaces for standard containers , additional accommodation for thirteen people and the dynamic positioning make the ship universally applicable, for example as a buoy laying, lighthouse tender, survey ship or for wreck search .
Ship name
The ship is named after Galateia , a nymph of Greek mythology. Other ships with this name were the warships HMS Galatea , the Spanish sailing training ship Galatea and the Danish corvette Galathea .
