Gallina is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of Castiglione d'Orcia in the province of Siena , Tuscany region in Italy .

geography

The place is about 5 km east of the capital Castiglione d'Orcia, about 45 km southeast of the provincial capital Siena , about 100 km southeast of the regional capital Florence and about 160 km northwest of the Italian capital Rome in the Orciatal at 316 m. The place had 157 inhabitants in 2001, in 2017 there were 140 inhabitants. The 43rd parallel north runs through the town . The river Orcia flows about 1.5 km north of Gallina, the Torrente Vellora about 500 m east.

history

At first the place was known as Osteria della Scala . This was named after the La Scala farm , which served as a hospital and post office on the Via Francigena (first mentioned in 1562, badly damaged in a fire in 1760). Initially, the place consisted of the courtyards (Poderi or Fattorie) La Poderina , La Rimbecca , La Scala and Le Briccole , today's center was not built until the post-war period.

  • Santa Maria dei Campi , church in the center from the 1970s.
  • Chiesa de la Scala ( Chiesina de la Scala ), church near the La Scala courtyard. Was in ruins until the 2010s and has been restored afterwards. The courtyard served as a post office from the 16th to the 19th century.
  • San Pellegrino , Romanesque church of the court (Italian Podere ) Le Briccole (Briccole di Sotto, also Bricule, Bricola, Bricus) and the former hospital (Hospitalis S. Peregrini Obricicolis) of the Camaldolese from Vivo d'Orcia . The farm is located south of Gallina and was built in the 11th century, the church and the hospital belonged to the monastery of Santa Mustiola (della Rosa) in Siena from 1438. In 1088 Mathilde von Tuszien was a guest in the village, in 1191 Philippe Auguste . Other guests were Arnold von Brescia , Gregory VII and Carlo d'Angio . The place is mentioned as Abricula in the records of Sigeric the Serious to the Via Francigena. He is here as XI. Station listed.
  • Ponte di Pian di Maggio (also Ponte Nove Luci or Ponte sull'Orcia ), bridge over the Orcia river towards Pienza with nine arches. Fell victim to the flood of November 28, 2012.
