history

The Palazzo Cervini

The place developed around the Hermitage Eremo di San Benedetto , which was founded in 1015 by the Camaldolese . The area was donated by Arrigo I to the founder of the Camaldolese, Romuald , in 1003. The Hermitage is now below the inhabited Borgo . In 1338 the Eremo was destroyed by the Salimbeni family from Senese. In 1460 the place was mentioned in documents from Pope Pius II ( Commentari, Lib. IX ). In the first half of the 16th century the place came as a gift from Pope Paul III. to the Cervini family from Montepulciano , who transformed the Hermitage into a palazzo. They also built mills, iron and copper processing workshops and oil press facilities, which led to an upswing in the population. The lands of the Cervini were located under the name Casette (also Caselle ) in the municipality of Abbadia San Salvatore and near the Eremo del Vivo in today's capital. They were merged in 1867 under the current place name. Since July 7, 1867, Vivo d'Orcia has been a part of Castiglione d'Orcia. From 1895 the aqueduct Acquedotto del Vivo (also Acquedotto di Siena ) was built.
