The Gamsfeld is with a height of 2027  m above sea level. A. the highest mountain in the Salzkammergut mountains .

Location and character of the mountain

The Gamsfeld stands in the southeast of the Salzkammergut Mountains within the Gamsfeld group , part of the Dachstein ceiling. It rises 3.5 kilometers north of the community of Russbach am Pass Gschütt . The closest large lakes in the Salzkammergut, Lake Hallstatt in the southeast and Lake Wolfgang in the northwest, are each a little over 10 kilometers away.

The highest point of the Gamsfeld lies just within the municipality of Rußbach in the Hallein district in the state of Salzburg . The area of the municipality of Strobl , which is already part of the political district of Salzburg-Umgebung , extends to the north up to 100 meters from the summit. One kilometer northeast of the summit runs the border to the Gmunden district and thus the federal state of Upper Austria .

The summit of the Gamsfeld is popular all year round. It offers an unobstructed panorama with particularly good views of the Dachstein massif and the Gosaukamm in the southeast.

Climbs

The best starting point for a tour of the Gamsfeld is a parking lot just north of Rußbach. The shortest ascent leads over the Traunwandalm and the steep southern flank directly to the summit. The path over the Angerkaralm and the cirque of the same name is longer but less steep. The walking time is around 3 hours. The two routes are marked and can be easily combined with one another.

The ascent over the Neualm , the Großer Brettkogel and the Haberfeld is significantly longer and more demanding; some sections have rope insurance.

In winter, the Gamsfeld is a popular destination for ski tours , with most of the start also in Rußbach.
