Gangnam for Freedom

Gangnam for Freedom (Eng. "Gangnam for Freedom") is a video on the video portal YouTube . It was produced by the British sculptor Anish Kapoor . In the video, Kapoor dances the Gangnam Style out of solidarity with the Chinese concept artist Ai Weiwei .

History of origin

On October 24, 2012, Chinese artist Ai Weiwei published a parody of the music video Gangnam Style on the Internet in protest of censorship . The following day, the Chinese censorship agency deleted the clip. In solidarity with Ai Weiwei, Anish Kapoor announced that he would be shooting his own version of the number one hit Gangnam Style . The aim of the video was to fight against arbitrariness and freedom of expression.

The film was shot in Anish Kapoor's studio in Camberwell , a part of the Southwark district in south London . Below is a list of museums that were involved in the filming:

The film premiered on the British broadcaster BBC Two on November 22, 2012. Many international human rights organizations , not least Amnesty International , had already spoken out in favor of participating in Gangnam for Freedom . A total of 400 dancers, artists and human rights activists were involved in the shooting. The video was officially uploaded to the YouTube internet platform on November 21, 2012.

In the video, scenes from Gangnam Style are parodied . It also includes a picture of Anish Kapoor in handcuffs. The last scene shows a list of the names of imprisoned human rights activists .

Reactions

There was a lot of media coverage in Great Britain in particular . The Evening Standard , The Guardian , The Daily Telegraph , and the BBC reported on the video . The US daily Los Angeles Times also reported on the video, as did the French daily Liberation , the Polish news channel TVN24 , the non-commercial broadcasting company Radio Free Asia founded by the US Congress , and the Russian-language side of the French international broadcaster Radio France International .

The Chinese-language version of the Wall Street Journal reports that Anish Kapoor's Gangnam for Freedom looks a lot more serious compared to Ai Weiwei's parody. Kate Allen, director of Amnesty International UK, called the video "a wonderful homage to Ai Weiwei" . According to the journalist Roslyn Sulcas in the New York Times the video was already 60,000 times shortly after the publication clicked .
