Garfield - Fett im Leben (Original title: Garfield Gets Real ) is an American comedy film by director Mark AZ Dippé from 2007 with the cartoon cat Garfield as the main character. The film is an indirect sequel to Garfield 2 from 2006. The film is a direct-to-DVD production and was released on DVD on October 1, 2007 in the USA and on March 3, 2008 in Germany.

action

In this film, the characters from comic newspaper strips live in their own dimension. The strips in which they appear are put together in a film studio using photos and a script. Then, at the push of a button on the control panel, they are teleported to the newspapers that are carried out in the “Real World”, as the residents call it. Through a screen in the studio, the comic strip characters can see the readers and their reactions.

Comic star Garfield is bored of the always similar routine of the everyday life of a comic book hero and dreams of a change of scenery. He and his friend Odie are transported into the real world through a hole in the wall next to the canvas. There they get to know the inconveniences of "real" life, such as pain, since everything was just put in their strips. In the process, they get to know the street cat Shecky, the cat Sheila and the dog Waldo, but they only consider their story to be a pipe dream. Garfield learns from the newspaper that because of his and Odie's disappearance, their comic strip will be discontinued and replaced with something new. Two applicants are the muscular dog and cat Hale and Hardy. Garfield fails to convince the editors that he and Odie are real, but the editor-in-chief gives them 24 hours to get the comic back into the paper because of Garfield's long popularity. Hale and Hardy want to prevent this and tie up Garfield, Odie and Shecky, in whose hiding place they are. When they disappear, they accidentally knock over a burning candle, which sets the old house on fire. However, Wally, another comic strip hero and friend of Garfield's, has since built a machine to bring Jon and the comic strip hero Billy Bear to Garfield and they manage to save them back to the comic world. Thus the Garfield Strip is now saved, which is why Hale and Hardy end up on the street. Meanwhile, Sheila and Waldo are surprised to find that their friend Shecky is suddenly part of the Garfield comic.

Cultural

The film studio also features Grimmy ( Mother Goose and Grimm ) and Dankward Bumskopp ( Blondie ). In addition, two children watch the movie Happy Fish in the real world on television .

criticism

The film received mostly negative reviews and was particularly criticized by fans of the comic book series. The film adaptation is lacking in humor and creativity. Contrary to those of the comics, the characters are “rarely lovable” and the sarcastic Garfield of the comics has become “a tame tomcat”. The animation, which appears "one-dimensional" , was also criticized . In addition, the color scheme is too bright and unnatural. In addition, Garfield's comic book world would hardly differ from the “real” world.

Sequels

Director Mark AZ Dippé made two more Garfield films in the same 3D look, Garfield - Fun Fest (2008) and Garfield - Animal Heroes ( Garfield's Pet Force , 2009) together with Frank Welker . Both films were released on DVD in Germany in November 2011.
