The cup kittens ( Garrya ) are a genus of plants with. Like the Aukubes, they belong to the Garryaceae family of the order Garryales . The 13 to 18 species are common in the New World .

Vegetative characteristics

In Garrya TYPES is evergreen shrubs or small trees , the plant height and plant diameter of up to 4 meters can achieve. They have leathery leaves that can be densely hairy ( Garrya elliptica ) on the underside .

Generative characteristics

Garrya species are dioecious separate sexes ( diocesan ). The slender, long and silky, catkin-like inflorescences bloom from the second half of winter to early summer. Male and female flowers are on different plants. The flowers of the male catkins are more conspicuous and can be seen in the second half of winter. The female plants produce clusters of purple-brown fruits in summer .

Systematics and distribution

The natural range is in the New World in California , West and Central America and the Caribbean islands. They grow there in the woods. In England they grow wild near the sea.

There are about 16 species in the genus Garrya :

Garrya buxifolia A.Gray : It is distributed from Oregon to California .

Garrya congdonii Eastw. : The home is California.

Garrya corvorum Standl. & Steyerm. : It occurs in Guatemala .

Garrya elliptica Douglas ex Lindl. : It is distributed from western Oregon to western California.

Garrya fadyenii Hook. : It occurs on the Caribbean islands of Cuba , Hispaniola and Jamaica .

Garrya flavescens S.Watson : It is distributed from the southwestern USA to Baja California .

Garrya Fremontii Torr. : It is distributed from Washington, Oregon and western Nevada to California.

Garrya glaberrima Wangerin : It is common in northeastern Mexico .

Garrya grisea Wiggins : It occurs in northern and central Baja California .

Garrya laurifolia Benth. : It is distributed with four subspecies from Mexico to Central America :

Garrya laurifolia subsp. laurifolia : It only occurs in Mexico.
Garrya laurifolia subsp. macrophylla (Benth.) Dahling : It occurs only in Mexico.
Garrya laurifolia subsp. quichensis (Donn.Sm.) Dahling : It occurs in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Panama.
Garrya laurifolia subsp. racemosa (Ramírez) Dahling : It occurs only in Mexico.

Garrya longifolia Rose : It is common in Mexico.

Garrya mexicana (Dahling) GLNesom (Syn .: Garrya ovata subsp. Mexicana Dahling ): It occurs only in southeastern Nuevo León in Mexico.

Garrya ovata Benth. : It is distributed with four subspecies from southwest Texas and New Mexico to Mexico:

Garrya ovata subsp. goldmanii (Wooton & Standl.) Dahling : It occurs from southeastern New Mexico to southwestern Texas and northeastern Mexico.
Garrya ovata subsp. lindheimeri (Torr.) Dahling : It occurs from southwest Texas to northeast Mexico.
Garrya ovata subsp. mexicana dahling
Garrya ovata subsp. ovata : It occurs in northeastern and southwestern Mexico.

Garrya salicifolia Eastw. : It occurs only in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur .

Garrya veatchii Kellogg : It is distributed from California to Baja California.

Garrya wrightii Torr. : It is distributed from Arizona and Texas to northwestern Mexico.

Garrya species and varieties grow best near the ocean, tolerate air pollution, and love the northeast sides of walls. They prefer well-drained soils and are then tolerant in their demands. They do well in moderately fertilized, fresh, sunny to partially shaded locations. Winter protection is appropriate in cold winters. The species Garrya elliptica and its variety Garrya elliptica 'James Roof' are (according to RHS) very hardy. They are valued for their leathery leaves and magnificent catkins.
