The cup kittens ( Garrya ) are a genus of plants with. Like the Aukubes, they belong to the Garryaceae family of the order Garryales . The 13 to 18 species are common in the New World .

Vegetative characteristics

In Garrya TYPES is evergreen shrubs or small trees , the plant height and plant diameter of up to 4 meters can achieve. They have leathery leaves that can be densely hairy ( Garrya elliptica ) on the underside .

Generative characteristics

Garrya species are dioecious separate sexes ( diocesan ). The slender, long and silky, catkin-like inflorescences bloom from the second half of winter to early summer. Male and female flowers are on different plants. The flowers of the male catkins are more conspicuous and can be seen in the second half of winter. The female plants produce clusters of purple-brown fruits in summer .

Systematics and distribution

The natural range is in the New World in California , West and Central America and the Caribbean islands. They grow there in the woods. In England they grow wild near the sea.

Garrya species and varieties grow best near the ocean, tolerate air pollution, and love the northeast sides of walls. They prefer well-drained soils and are then tolerant in their demands. They do well in moderately fertilized, fresh, sunny to partially shaded locations. Winter protection is appropriate in cold winters. The species Garrya elliptica and its variety Garrya elliptica 'James Roof' are (according to RHS) very hardy. They are valued for their leathery leaves and magnificent catkins.
