Gary Ennis Collins (born April 30, 1938 in Los Angeles , California - † October 13, 2012 in Biloxi , Mississippi ) was an American actor and television presenter .

Life

Collins was born in Venice, Los Angeles in 1938 , grew up in Southern California and attended Santa Monica City College . He then completed his military service for two years in the United States Army , where he discovered his interest in acting with the American Forces Network . He made his acting debut in the 1962 film comedy It began in Rome, directed by Melville Shavelson , alongside Charlton Heston and Elsa Martinelli as Major Wolff. Later he was able to get three longer series engagements. So he played Lt. Richard P. 'Rip' Ripley in 29 episodes of The Wackiest Ship in the Army , Dave Tarrant in 43 episodes of Iron Horse and Dr. Michael Rhodes in 26 episodes of the television series The Sixth Sense .

In parallel with his acting, Collins has hosted several television shows since the early 1980s, including Hour Magazine , The New Hollywood Squares, and The Home Show . For his moderation in Hour Magazine he was nominated six times in a row for a Daytime Emmy Award from 1982 to 1987 , which he won in 1984. Collins earned his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6922 Hollywood Blvd.

Collins was married to Susan Peterson Lachman from October 3, 1964 to August 3, 1967. The couple had two children together. Since November 24, 1967, he was married to Miss America of 1959, Mary Ann Mobley . The couple had a child together.
