Career

Brighton & Hove Albion (1979-1983)

Gary Stevens made his debut on September 15, 1979 at the age of 17 for the English first division club Brighton & Hove Albion . Later in the 1979/80 season , he played twenty-five league games and scored one goal. In the following three first division seasons he made a name for himself as a regular in Brighton and ended the First Division consistently in the lower midfield of the table. In the First Division 1982/83 he rose with his team as bottom of the table in the second division. But the outsider moved into the final of the FA Cup 1982/83 and reached a 2-2 in the final against Manchester United . Gary Stevens scored the late equalizer in the 87th minute. Five days later, Brighton clearly lost the replay game 4-0.

Tottenham Hotspur (1983-1990)

After relegation with Brighton, Stevens moved to Tottenham Hotspur in June 1983 . He moved into the final of the 1983/84 UEFA Cup with last year's fourth and defeated RSC Anderlecht 4-3 on penalties after two close matches . Stevens appeared as the third shooter for the Spurs and finished 3-1 in the meantime. In the league, the team only reached eighth place, but moved again as defending champions in the 1984/85 UEFA Cup and failed in the quarter-finals against eventual titleholders Real Madrid (0-1 and 0-0). Gary Stevens' team (28 league games) played significantly better in 1984/85 when they reached third place in the table. However, due to the international ban of all English clubs as a result of the Heysel disaster , Tottenham missed the return to the European Cup. The team around top scorer Clive Allen achieved a good league placement in the First Division 1986/87 as third in the table. In addition, the club moved into the final of the FA Cup 1986/87 , but lost this game 2: 3 after extra time against Coventry City . Gary Stevens came on as a substitute for Osvaldo Ardiles at the start of extra time. In the following seasons, Stevens' stakes were significantly reduced after a serious injury in 1988.

Portsmouth FC (1990-1992)

In January 1990, the 27-year-old Gary Stevens moved to the second division club Portsmouth . After two and a half years in the Football League Second Division , he ended his career prematurely at the age of 30 due to injury.

English national team (1984–1986)

Gary Stevens made his debut on October 17, 1984 in qualifying for the 1986 World Cup for England in a 5-0 home win over Finland. He played two more games in qualifying and was appointed to the English World Cup squad by coach Bobby Robson . He played his first World Cup game in the second round game in a 0-0 draw against Morocco. His second and final appearance in this tournament was in the round of 16 in a 3-0 win against Paraguay. England failed in the quarter-finals with 1: 2 against eventual world champions Argentina. A special feature was the fact that Gary Stevens (* 1963) from Everton FC was another player of the same name in the English World Cup squad. After the tournament, Stevens did not play another international match.
