history

The place historically consisting of the settlements Groß- and Kleingauitsch includes the corridors between Steinbachgraben and Wöllinggraben and once belonged to the Seckau district . Ecclesiastically Gauitsch was under the parish of Kitzegg (Kitzeck). Viticulture is traditionally of economic importance. In addition, the residents once ran cattle breeding on a large scale. In the statistical-topographical regional schematic of the Duchy of Steyermarck from 1818, Gauitsch is named as a "village of 60 houses and 265 inhabitants, then 28 oxen and 76 cows".

In the first half of the 19th century several large wineries were owned by non-residents, including a. the Orthofer family from Graz , who owned 14 yoke (approx. 8 hectares) of vineyards here.

In the 20th century, due to emigration to economically more developed regions, the number of inhabitants also fell in Gauitsch. In 2001 the place still had 164 inhabitants.

Gauitsch is associated with the ghost of Trebian . These were ghostly phenomena that were attributed to a French soldier who was said to have shot a couple on March 18, 1809. A literary exploitation of this topic can be found in a volume on Spuk in der Steiermark and in a detective novel.
