Gauti Þormóðsson (born March 14, 1987 ) is a former Icelandic ice hockey player and today's coach. Since 2014 he has been the head coach of UMFK Esja in the Icelandic ice hockey league.

Career

Gauti Þormóðsson began his career as a hockey player at Skautafélag Reykjavíkur , for whom he made his debut in the Icelandic ice hockey league as a teenager . In 2006, 2007 and 2009 he and his team became Icelandic national champions . In 2010 he was the top scorer and best preparer in the Icelandic league. In 2014 he moved to UMFK Esja , who had just been accepted into the Icelandic league, where he was already working as a coach in addition to his playing career. After the end of his active career, he will continue to be the head coach there.

International

Gauti Þormóðsson played for Iceland as a youth. He first took part in the U18 World Championships in 2003 in Division III and in 2004 and 2005 in Division II. With the U20 selection of Icelanders, he took part in the World Championships in 2004 and 2007 in Division II and in 2005 and 2006 in Division III.

Parallel to the appearances in the junior teams, Gauti Þormóðsson already played in the men's national team . He made his debut at the age of 17 at the 2004 World Cup in Division III when he was promoted to Division II with the Icelanders. In 2006 he played again in Division III after relegation and achieved immediate promotion. In 2005 , 2007 , 2009 and 2011 he represented the Northmen in Division II.

At the U20 World Cup in 2016 he was the assistant coach of the Icelandic youngsters who played in Division III.
