The Geierwand ( Italian Col di Specie ) is a 2088  m , according to other sources 2100  m high mountain in the Braies Dolomites in South Tyrol , Italy . It is located north of Schluderbach in the Höhlensteintal and is part of the Fanes-Senes-Braies nature park .

During the First World War , the Geierwand was part of the Austrian fortifications on the border with Italy . It belonged to the Ampezzo barrier group and was secured on the Strudelalpe (plateau above the Geierwand) by two companies with six machine guns . Larger fortifications nearby were the Plätzwiese plant and the Landro plant .

Today, the 260 meter high southeast face of the mountain above the Höhlenstein valley, also known as the Geierwand ( Italian Parete dell 'Avvoltoio ), is a popular and challenging climbing destination. The classic Palfrader tour by Franz Palfrader from the 1970s with a level of difficulty V – VII is still one of the easier. In 1991 Christoph Hainz and Hans Kammerlander opened a variant. Hainz had previously climbed Geierwally (VIII) in 1989 and Geierkralle (VIII +) in 1990 . In 2008, Simon Gietl and Günther Ausserhofer first climbed what they considered to be the heaviest normal hook route in the Geierwand with a whisper of the wind (suggestion: VIII / VIII-, repetition is pending in December 2008) .
