List of geographical companies
The list of geographical societies (from ancient Greek geographía "geography") lists geographical societies of supraregional importance or long tradition. The registered office (if not evident from the name) and year of foundation are given. There are 29 such companies in Germany, 2 in Austria and 7 in Switzerland. In addition to these amateur societies, there are professional associations of geographers that are also listed. However, geographic research institutes are not listed.
The oldest geographical societies were created in the first half of the 19th century, such as the Société de géographie in 1821, the Geographical Society in 1828 and the Royal Geographical Society in 1830. In them organized in general at the geography interested, mostly the middle class entstammende people to To carry out trade and research trips , often expeditions to remote areas. With the university institutionalization of geography, however, the importance of societies for geographic research dwindled.
