He is a member of the German Society for Geography (DGfG).

history

On March 11, 1861, 17 men (eight scientists , five entrepreneurs and bankers as well as two publishers and royal Saxon officials ) founded the Society of Friends of Geography in Leipzig ; according to the statutes with the purpose of "promoting geography in the broadest sense" - initially through meetings in which lectures on geography were held. The association was the fourth geographical society of this kind in Germany, later founding of associations in cities such as Dresden and Halle were encouraged by the people of Leipzig. Julius Victor Carus was elected as the first chairman, the founding members included Karl Christian Bruhns , Hermann Brockhaus , Albert Dufour-Féronce , Berend Wilhelm Feddersen , Heinrich Leberecht Fleischer , Wilhelm Roscher and Henry Lange . A short time later, the Leipzig Carl-Ritter -Stiftung was set up by the association with the aim of "supporting larger travel companies and the publication of more expensive geographical works", later other foundations followed. At the end of the first financial year , the association already had 75 members. Honorary members were appointed for the first time in 1866, including internationally renowned scientists; the number grew to 67 by 1936.

With the Carl-Ritter-Stiftung, the association financially supported several expeditions, for example that of Karl Moritz von Beurmann , who tried in 1862 to clarify the fate of the traveler Eduard Vogel , who had disappeared in Wadai (Eduard Vogel was the son of the association's co-founder, Carl Vogel, city high school director and author of several school books - not to be confused with the cartographer of the same name Carl Vogel) In addition, the association undertook its own research trips. In 1898, the association donated a medal of honor to honor Vogel, which was awarded eight times between 1901 and 1938. In 1911 the association was renamed the Society for Geography in Leipzig , on the occasion of the 50th anniversary an anniversary celebration was held in the Leipzig Congress Hall. At that time the association had over 1,000 members. The speakers at this time included Fridtjof Nansen , Roald Amundsen and Sven Hedin .

During the First World War , the Great Depression and the Second World War , the association's activities had to be severely restricted except for the lecture program; the assets of the association and the foundations were largely lost due to inflation . In 1936, the association celebrated its 75th anniversary with a ceremony in the New Town Hall , at which the Mayor of Leipzig, Carl Friedrich Goerdeler, gave the address.

After the Second World War, the company was not allowed to continue its work and the association's assets were confiscated. In 1946 the association's own library (1936 holdings: around 30,000 volumes) was handed over to the German Institute for Regional Geography. Two years later, the association's successor, the Leipzig Geography Working Group , was founded in 1949 and belonged to the GDR Cultural Association. The Geographical Society of the GDR was established in 1954, and the geography working group acted as the Leipzig local section of the society from that point on. In 1957 the section, which held monthly lecture evenings, had more than 500 members. Geographers' congresses were organized in Leipzig in 1964 and 1981, and the Society's excursions abroad were often led by members of the Leipzig Section. A great advantage for the association's activity was the fact that the secretariat of the Geographical Society of the GDR was housed in the German Institute for Regional Geography in Leipzig.

After the Geographical Society of the GDR and thus also the Leipzig local section was dissolved as part of the German reunification , the association was re-established as Geographische Gesellschaft zu Leipzig eV on February 5, 1991 , the entry in the register of associations took place on February 28, 1992. The Since then, the main focus of the association's activities has been on "disseminating geographical knowledge to all interested citizens through lectures and excursions, promoting geographical research in the city and region of Leipzig, and continuing education for geography teachers". In 2011 the society celebrated its 150th anniversary with the exhibition 150 Years of Geography in Leipzig .

Publishing activity

In addition to the association's announcements, articles from geography, regional geography and other areas of geosciences were also published.
