In 1717, according to other information, in 1719, he first went to the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel as registrar , and was its first secretary from 1727 to 1751. During his long years of service Lauterbach made great contributions to the ducal library. He continued the alphabetical catalog created by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz by entering new acquisitions and introducing real headings . He put together the first alphabetical index of Weißenburger and Gudeschen as well as extravagant manuscripts. Lauterbach took care of the purchase of new books, he wrapped manuscripts and prints and created the often preserved headings and table of contents for anthologies. He was valued by a large number of learned users of the library, as evidenced by his extensive correspondence. Lauterbach published 1737 under a pseudonym published history of the order . A catalog of balneological literature, a list of famous people from the books in the library and a collection of genealogical notes remained unprinted .

Lauterbach died in August 1751 at the age of 67 in Wolfenbüttel.
