Georg Friedrich Hildebrandt
Georg Friedrich Hildebrandt (born June 5, 1764 in Hanover , † March 23, 1816 in Erlangen ) was a German scholar and professor of medicine , chemistry and physics in Erlangen .
Origin and education
The son of the royal British personal surgeon Johann Georg Hildebrand and Johanna Eleonora, b. Hartmann was orphaned at an early age and was looked after by his stepmother Johanna Augusta Brandes. He was well on the way to becoming a “complete good-for-nothing” if not the nephew of the pastor Ludwig Christian Mensching (1716–1781), Hofmedicus August Ludwig Mensching (1753–1804), who came from Helstorf Had rented a house, would have accepted Hildebrandt's upbringing. As a 12-year-old, he entered the top class of the local grammar school to the director Johann Daniel Schumann and the principal Heinrich Philipp Sextro . At the age of 16 he began studying natural sciences and medicine at the University of Göttingen under Heinrich August Wrisberg , Johann Friedrich Blumenbach , Ernst Gottfried Baldinger and Johan Andreas Murray . Three years later he received his doctorate with the thesis De pulmonibus .
Scientific career
To gain practical experience, he visited German manufactories, mines and hospitals. In 1785 he returned to Göttingen and was initially a private lecturer.
In Berlin in 1786 he met the Duke of Braunschweig , who appointed him professor of anatomy at the Braunschweig Institute of Anatomy and Surgery , where Georg Friedrich Mühry (1774–1848) served as his assistant from 1791 to 1793 .
In 1793 he was appointed professor of medicine and chemistry in Erlangen. In the same year he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and a member of the Leopoldina . After Johann Tobias Mayer was recalled to Göttingen in 1799, he also took over the professorship in physics. In the same year he became Vice Rector. In 1812 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . He was an honorary member of the Göttingen physical private society founded in 1789. He was also a member of the Freemason Lodge "Lebanon zu den Drei Cedern" in Erlangen.
