Georg Höltker

Georg Höltker SVD (born May 22, 1895 in Ahaus ; † January 22, 1976 in Troisdorf ) was a German priest, missionary and ethnologist.

Life

He attended elementary school in Nienkiärken and worked in a factory for a year. From 1910 he attended the missionary school of the Steyler missionaries in Steyl . After his military service on the Western Front , he entered the novitiate of the Steyler Missionaries in Sankt Augustin in 1919 . After studying at the St. Gabriel Mission House , he was ordained a priest on May 13, 1925. In 1926 he was a guest student at the University of Vienna . From 1927 to 1929 he was a guest student at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin with Konrad Theodor Preuss , Walter Lehmann and Richard Thurnwald . At the same time, a chaplain was in Neukölln . In 1930 he moved back to Mödling . After his doctorate ( The Aztec Family in Old Mexico. An ethnological, sociological study ) in Vienna in 1930 he worked at the Museo Missionario-Etnologico in the Lateran . In 1932 he became the chief editor of Anthropos magazine . From 1936 to 1939 he conducted field research on the northeast coast of New Guinea . From 1943 to 1953 he taught ethnology at the Basel Tropical Institute . In 1948 he was appointed associate professor for ethnology at the University of Friborg . In 1954 he became a teacher at the Marienburg high school . From 1960 to 1969 he taught as a professor of ethnology at the St. Augustine Missionary Seminary . In 1965 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class, for his contribution to the exploration of New Guinea . After his death in Troisdorf hospital, he was buried four days later in the cemetery of the mission seminary in Sankt Augustin .
