Georg Kaufmann (historian)

Georg Heinrich Kaufmann (born September 9, 1842 in Münden , † December 28, 1929 in Breslau , Lower Silesia Province ) was a German historian .

Life

Kaufmann was born the son of a pastor and after his early death moved to his brother in Halle , where he went to Latin school and attended the grammar school of the Francke Foundations . He studied history and philology at the Universities of Halle and Göttingen . During his studies he became a member of the Germania fraternity in Halle in 1861 and of the Brunsviga fraternity in Göttingen in 1863 .

Kaufmann worked as a national liberal publicist , belonged to the National Liberal Party (NLP) and worked as a high school teacher in Göttingen and Strasbourg . In 1876 he completed his habilitation at the Strasbourg Philosophy Faculty for Middle and New History. There he worked as a private lecturer . In 1888 he became a professor at the academy in Münster , and from 1891 he was full professor for Medieval and Modern History at the University of Breslau . 1905/06 he worked there as rector. In 1921 he retired. He became a secret councilor .

Kaufmann conducted research on general German and university history in the 19th century. From 1898 to 1900 he was chairman of the German Association of Historians . He was also an employee of the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie .

He was married to Emmy Vosberg.
