Georg Krüger (astronomer)

Georg Krüger (* 1642 or 1643 in Lieberose , Niederlausitz ; † May 23, 1707 in Niederbartau , Kurland ) was a Sorbian educator , astronomer and pastor . He created the first meteorological calendar for Courland and Livonia.

Life

Already in 1656, Georg Krüger enrolled at the university in Frankfurt an der Oder . From 1662 he attended the cathedral school in Naumburg , where he became familiar with the basics of astronomy . In 1665 he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg .

Since 1670 Georg Krüger was the principal of the school in Storkow , at that time in Niederlausitz. In 1674 he was again a student in Wittenberg, where he received his doctorate in philosophy. In 1675 he held a scientific disputation on the history of the Sorbs.

In 1676 Georg Krüger became an assistant to the astronomer Johannes Hevelius in Danzig . In 1680 he went to Libau in Courland , where he became principal of the local school. He devoted himself to weather observation and in 1681 created the first calendar with weather forecasts for Courland.

In 1686 Duke Friedrich Casimir appointed him court astronomer. In 1690 Georg Krüger also became pastor in Nieder- and Oberbartau.
