Georg Lienhardt OPraem (born January 29, 1717 in Überlingen , † December 9, 1783 in Roggenburg ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman, Premonstratensian , abbot of the Roggenburg Monastery , theologian and author.

life and work

Christoph Conrad Xaver Lienhardt (also: Lienhard or Lienhart ) went in Ueberlingen to school and studied at the Jesuit Lyceum Konstanz , and at the Jesuit -led University of Dillingen . In 1735 he entered the Premonstratensian Monastery of Roggenburg and took the religious name Georg . After his ordination in 1741 he taught at the monastery school and became novice master and prior in the monastery . From 1753 until his death he was abbot of Roggenburg for thirty years. Under his leadership, the number of monks doubled from 20 to 40. He had a decisive influence on the construction of the new church and monastery, which his predecessor Caspar Geisler had begun shortly before his election (in cooperation with the master builder Johann Martin Kraemer and the painter Franz Martin Kuen ). From 1771 he was vicar general of the Swabian Circarie and from 1778 director of the Swabian College of Reich Prelates in the Reichstag in Regensburg . He died of a stroke at the age of 66.

Lienhardt bought an important library in 1766 and himself published a dozen partly extensive theological and religious history works in Latin between 1746 and 1782, which were recently honored by the Premonstratensian Ulrich Gottfried Leinsle (* 1948). To mark the three hundredth anniversary of his birthday, the monastery dedicated a special exhibition to him in 2017.

His work "Ogdoas erotematum ..." was placed on the index in 1747, one year after it was published .
