Georg Matern (painter)

Georg Matern (born June 25, 1921 in Preußisch Eylau ; † December 3, 2005 in Barsinghausen ) was a German painter of modern art .

Life

Matern was born the son of a farmer in East Prussia , where he grew up with two brothers and his sister. At the grammar school he was particularly interested in languages ​​as well as art classes. After graduating from school, he began his training at Kali Chemie AG in Berlin in 1938 . He was a member of the Confessing Church .

Matern took part in World War II and, after being released from British captivity , came to Höxter in Lower Saxony as a harvest worker . His father died in a Danish refugee camp in 1947 . Finally, Matern found his temporarily missing mother and sister and took them to the West. In Sehnde he found another job at Kali Chemie AG, which has since moved there.

From then on he devoted himself to painting, moved to Hanover in 1952 with his sister and mother († 1962) , where he had a lively exchange with professors from the fine arts department of the college , including Kurt Sohns , Hans Meyboden and Günter Krause-Görlitz . Matern first traveled to Italy in 1953 . This and the following stays in Italy were his source of inspiration. The first exhibitions of his works took place in 1958 and 1968 in the Künstlerhaus of the Kunstverein Hannover .

In 1963 he settled in Barsinghausen and worked in the headquarters of Kali Chemie AG until his retirement in 1979.

The first Italian exhibition in Milan under the title "Georg Matern - Un maestro tedesco" (Georg Matern - A German Master) in October 2005 met with a great response in art circles and was greeted by Georg Matern with gratitude and satisfaction, despite decreasing physical strength. Until his death on December 3, 2005, he took an active part in the international art scene.
