Georg Mezger

Georg Caspar Mezger , also Georg Kaspar Mezger (born January 23, 1801 in Wassertrüdingen , † April 19, 1874 in Augsburg ) was a German educator and librarian .

Life

Mezger was the son of a craftsman and initially followed his father in his profession. Because of his good writing, he was appointed as a clerk by the local rent office . During this time he taught himself high school material, in particular he learned Greek and Latin. In 1819 he was therefore able to enter the upper classes of the grammar school at St. Anna in Augsburg. From 1820 to 1823 he studied theology and classical philology at the University of Erlangen . There he was particularly under the influence of Ludwig Döderlein . He returned to Augsburg, where he became vicar and court master of Karl Ludwig Forster. In 1824 he pursued further philological studies in Munich .

Mezger became an assistant teacher at the grammar school near St. Anna in 1824 and rose to grammar school professor in 1827 . From 1840 he held the post of rector of the grammar school and at the same time the board of directors of the Anna-Kolleg, an affiliated educational institution. In 1840, 1853 and 1857 he was a member of the General Synod and, in 1854, a member of the commission that worked out the Bavarian school plan. He was also a member of the examination committee for grammar school teaching from 1854 to 1865 and also a member of the theological examination committee from 1854 to 1856. He also held the office of district scholar.

Mezger was also the librarian of the Augsburg district and city library from 1835 to 1872 . During his tenure, he was able to expand the library by around 100,000 volumes. He was able to win these especially from the secularized monasteries. The cataloging of the volumes also fell into his time .

Mezger suffered a stroke in 1872 and had to retire from all offices as a result.

Mezger was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Erlangen ( Dr. phil. Hc ) on August 25, 1843 . He was also awarded the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of Merit by Saint Michael in 1849 . In 1864 he also received the title of royal school councilor .
