Georg Michael Heber

Georg Michael Heber (born December 27, 1652 in Wittenberg , † February 4, 1702 in Wittenberg) was a German legal scholar.

Life

Heber was born the son of the merchant and mayor Georg Hebner († November 14, 1692) and his wife Anna Justina (born September 18, 1631 in Wittenberg, † March 28, 1696), the daughter of Zerbst councilor Johann Ringelhahn. From 1671 studied at the University of Wittenberg and at the University of Leipzig . He then made trips to England , Holland and France , where he also met Aegidius Menagius (1613–1692) and stayed for some time.

After he returned to his hometown, he acquired on July 12, 1680 the Licentiate of Laws, was born on April 22, 1682 Professor of the institutions and a PhD on 14 December of the same year Doctor of Law. When he was promoted to professor of the Code, he took over a seat as an assessor at the Wittenberg court. Heber also took part in the organizational tasks of the Wittenberg Academy and took over the rectorate of the university in the summer semesters of 1687 and 1695 .

However, he was not only concerned with legal subjects, but increasingly with theological subjects. He was famous for his skills in the Latin language and is considered a patron and friend of Christian Thomasius . Heber was also involved in the committees of his hometown, was elected syndic of the city in 1692 and was promoted to mayor after the death of his father.

On August 24, 1685 he married Beata Elisabeth, the daughter of the theology professor Johann Andreas Quenstedt . From this marriage the children Johanna Justina Heber (born December 31, 1686 in Wittenberg; † October 30, 1692 in Wittenberg), Johann Wilhelm Heber (born June 28, 1689 in Wittenberg), Carl Friedrich Heber (born February 16, 1694, † June 24, 1694 in Wittenberg) and Carl Friedrich Heber (born April 12, 1701 in Wittenberg; † June 13, 1721 in Wittenberg).

Often tormented by gout, he took a drug in 1702 without consulting a doctor and thereby suffered his sudden death. He was buried on February 12, 1702 in the Wittenberg cemetery.
