Georg Rosen (born September 14, 1895 in Shirvan , Persia ; † July 22, 1961 in Detmold ) was a German lawyer and diplomat .

Life

Rosen was born in 1895 near Tehran, the capital of Iran, as the son of the future German Foreign Minister Friedrich Rosen . His father and grandfather were both eminent Orientalists. In 1917 Georg Rosen took part in the First World War as a volunteer , serving on the Western Front .

After graduating, he entered the diplomatic service in 1921. He held the academic title of Dr. jur.

From 1933 to 1938 he worked as a legation secretary at the German Embassy in China , including in 1937 in Nanjing , the then capital of China. During this time he worked with the German businessman John Rabe , after the Japanese attack on China, during the Nanking (also Nanjing) massacre in 1937/38 to establish a protection zone to protect the Chinese civilian population from attacks by the Japanese Soldiers bid. In doing so, he helped save the lives of more than 200,000 Chinese. Rosen's role in saving civilians is fully portrayed in the film John Rabe .

Due to his Jewish ancestors, Rosen was passed over for promotions in the Third Reich and was forced to leave the diplomatic service in 1938. In 1938 he emigrated to London and later to the USA , where he taught at several universities. After the war, Rosen returned to the Federal Republic of Germany and was again active in the foreign service. His stations were London (Counselor) and Montevideo , where he was appointed ambassador . In 1960 Rosen was retired.

Rosen was a Rhodes Fellow . After the Second World War he campaigned for Germans to be re- admitted to the University of Oxford as scholarship holders .
