Georg Schmidt (genealogist)

Georg Schmidt (born March 22, 1838 in Halle (Saale) ; † November 6, 1920 ibid) was a German theologian and genealogist .

Life

Georg Schmidt was the son of Dr. Maximilian Friedrich Christian Schmidt and Cölestine, née Constantin.

He attended the pedagogy in Halle and has been concerned with history since his youth . After graduating from high school, he studied theology and received his doctorate as Dr. phil. In 1867 he became a chaplain . In 1868 he received his first pastor's position in Vetschau . He took part in the Franco-German War of 1870/71 as a hospital preacher in Pont-à-Mousson . In 1871 he became archdeacon in Luckau and in 1875 pastor in Filehne . After five years he was transferred to Leuna in 1880 . From 1891 he was in charge of the pastorate in Sachsenburg . In 1903 he retired and moved back to Halle, where he also died.

He researched and published since 1888 on the Central and North German nobility, mainly in Saxony , the Province of Saxony and in the Mark Brandenburg and was in connection with many noble families. On their behalf, he created many family chronicles, which presented well-founded stories of families.

At the end of his life he was an honorary member of the Upper Lusatian Society of Sciences, Foreign Member of the Royal Academy of Non-Profit Science in Erfurt , Honorary Member of the Herold Association in Berlin , Chairman of the Saxon-Thuringian History Association in Halle and a member of the Historical Commission for Saxony and Anhalt.
