Georg Schweitzer

Georg Julius Arthur Schweitzer (born April 12, 1850 in Berlin ; † October 21, 1940 there ) was a German publicist , journalist and travel writer .

Life

Georg Schweitzer began his professional career in 1873 as a business journalist for the national newspaper . From 1875 he headed the Berlin agency for the commercial section of the Frankfurter Zeitung . In addition, in the following years Schweitzer was the correspondent for a number of other German newspapers such as the Hannoversche Courier and the Breslauer Morgenzeitung . He is also a commercial editor for the Vossische Zeitung , Post and Norddeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung . After he had organized the East Asian Lloy , a German newspaper published in Shanghai , in 1898 , he founded the colonial newspapers Deutsche Japan-Post in Yokohama and Tsingtau Latest News in Tsingtau . In addition, until 1914 he was entrusted with the management of a dispatch service for all of East Asia .

During the First World War , Schweitzer served with the rank of major in the intelligence department of the Great General Staff . He then chaired the Berlin press conference he founded in 1915 until 1932 . He was a board member of the Kyffhäuserbund and co-founder of the press ball .

Georg Schweitzer was a cousin of the famous traveler Emin Pascha and after his death in 1892 was appointed guardian of his underage daughter Ferida. In addition to publishing Emin Pasha's diaries, letters and scientific records, he wrote humorous travel and stock market literature.

Schweitzer is the namesake for the Schweitzer Glacier in the Antarctic.

Georg Schweitzer died in Berlin in 1940 at the age of 90. He was buried in the Schweitzer family's hereditary funeral in the Old St. Matthew Cemetery in Berlin-Schöneberg , where his father, the journalist Julius Schweitzer (1820-1893), was also buried. The sandstone wall grave in the neo-renaissance style has been preserved.
