Life

Johann Ernst Georg was a son of the married couple Andreas and Maria Louise Stosch born. Heincke. From 1871 to 1874 he studied theology in Leipzig and Erlangen . He was then vicar to Max Frommel in the Siloah community of Ispringen, which belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Baden . From 1877 to 1880 he was pastor in Rosenthal ( Saxon Switzerland ). During this time he married Helene Richter on October 18, 1877, who was a daughter of the pastor and master's degree Richard Richter and his wife Dorothea Rosalie, née. Bird was. In 1880 he moved to Marienberg near Helmstedt , where he worked as pastor at the church of the Lutheran Cistercian convent for eight years . In 1888 he joined the Leipzig Mission and was sent to what is now Tamil Nadu , where he was responsible for the Cuddalore mission station from February 1889 and for Panrutti from 1890. In 1891 he was transferred to Madras . In 1892 he had to leave the missionary service for health reasons, returned home and became pastor at the Queen Elisabeth Evangelical Hospital in Berlin , where from 1902 he also lectured in missiology at the university . In 1906 he took over a pastor's position in Neuwedell (Pomerania) .

Theologically, Stosch was committed to the north German neo-Lutheranism and thus above all to theologians such as Claus Harms , Louis Harms , Ludwig Adolf Petri and Theodor Kliefoth . He paid particular attention to the sacrament of the altar , which he describes as follows:

“... the word of forgiveness only penetrates as far as our consciousness reaches. It does not penetrate into the hidden depths of our soul, into the sinful reasons of our nature ... Should it not be a consolation for us that the unrecognized sins are blotted out and atoned for through Christ's body and blood so that they do not have to be placed in the light before God's face? That the sins slumbering in our nature be forgiven before they awaken and destroy us? "

As a member of the Bible Association , he advocated the verbal inspiration and inerrancy of the Bible in several publications .
