Georg von Bismarck (born February 15, 1891 in Neumühl near Küstrin in the Neumark , † August 31, 1942 in El Alamein , Egypt ) was major general and division commander of the 21st Panzer Division in the African campaign .

family

Georg von Bismarck was the son of royal Prussia. State Forester Klaus von Bismarck (1851–1923) and Wally Witte (1859–1951) (Briester line). Bismarck married Margarethe von Webern on March 26, 1921 in Berlin (born July 15, 1893 in Meiningen , † April 24, 1925 in Kolberg ), the daughter of General von Webern and Margarethe Countess von Hopffgarten. In his second marriage, on May 20, 1929 in Augustfelde , Kr. Rummelsburg, Pomerania, he was married to Marly Wollf (born March 8, 1908 in Deutsch Eylau ; † November 1 in Flensburg ), the daughter of Major Theodor Wolff , on Augustfelde, and Luise Becker-Bartin. Bismarck had a son from both marriages; one is Wolf-Rüdiger von Bismarck .

Life

After his school days, Bismarck joined the Hussar Regiment "Graf Goetzen" (2nd Silesian) No. 6 in Oels / Silesia in 1910 as a flag squire . In the First World War he was first as a lieutenant , later as a first lieutenant and adjutant in the front, until July 1916 on the western front , then on the Carpathian front , then on the southern front near Isonzo and finally again in 1917/18 on the western front.

Bismarck had been a member of the Reichswehr since 1919 . Taken into the Wehrmacht , he was promoted to colonel in 1938 and appointed commander of the 7th Cavalry Rifle Regiment in Gera .

During World War II , Bismarck was again at the front, in September 1939 he took part in the invasion of Poland with his regiment , in 1940 on the Western Front (breakthrough of the Maginot Line ), in 1941 he was brigade commander , later acting as commander of the 20th Panzer Division on the Eastern Front. In January 1942 he was transferred to the German Africa Corps in Italian Libya and appointed commander of the 21st Panzer Division . This was subordinate to the Panzer Army Africa , which was commanded by Field Marshal Rommel . On April 1, 1942, he was promoted to major general. Bismarck was killed on the night of August 30th to 31st, 1942 in the course of the Battle of Alam Halfa , in which the Axis powers launched the last offensive on Egyptian soil, by an air raid by the Royal Air Force . After his death he was promoted posthumously to lieutenant general.
