George Henry Hermann Karsten , also Georg Heinrich Hermann Karsten (born November 3, 1863 in Rostock , † May 7, 1937 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German botanist . His botanical author abbreviation is " G.Karst. "And occurs mainly with algae , there mostly in the form" G. Karsten ".

Career

George Karsten (No. 7-1-5-B. With his great-great grandfather Wenceslaus Johann Gustav Karsten incipient sex counting ), only son and second of five children of a doctorate lawyer and former Acting Mayor of brawn , Karl Karsten (1829-1884) and its Mrs. Helenita, b. Blohm (1841–1925) began studying natural sciences at the universities of Strasbourg and Zurich , and from October 1884 in his hometown of Rostock . His doctorate as Dr. phil. took place in 1885 at the University of Strasbourg, his habilitation in 1892 at the University of Leipzig , where he also held lectures until 1895. He then held extraordinary professorships at the University of Kiel (1898) and at the University of Bonn (from 1899). In 1909 he received a call to the University of Halle , where he held a full professorship for botany. At the same time he became director of the botanical garden . He continued his teaching until Wilhelm Troll was appointed in 1932. On August 5, 1911 , he was accepted into the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
