George Matthewson Thomson (born October 19, 1936 in Edinburgh , † July 2007 in Lancashire ) was a Scottish football player . As a left -back and Rotor he won with Heart of Midlothian initially each twice the Scottish Cup ( 1958 and 1960 ) and the League Cup (in seasons 1958/59 and 1959/60 ). It followed in November 1960, the move to Everton FC . There he won the English championship title in the 1962/63 season .

Athletic career

Thomson learned to play football in his hometown of Edinburgh, first with Edinburgh City and then in the youth department of Heart of Midlothian . He made his debut in the first team on February 23, 1957 in the first division duel with FC Falkirk , which ended with a 1-1 draw. In the remaining games of the 1956/57 season he came on six more league appearances. In the following three years Thomson was part of a successful team as an outside runner and left defender, which won the Scottish Championship twice and the League Cup twice. He missed only four of 102 championship games - none of them in his (second) championship season 1959/60. In addition, he completed two games for the Scottish U-23 selection against England and Belgium. Thomson's offensive urge was unusual and he scored more goals for the "Hearts", which were considered well occupied on the left wing ( David Holt was also responsible for this ) than was usual for a defender at this time. In November 1960, after a total of 157 competitive games, he moved to England with his teammate Alex Young to Everton FC .

Thomson spent around three years in Liverpool and although he won the English championship in the 1962/63 season and completed a total of 20 competitive games that year, he did not succeed in conquering a regular place. As a safeguard in the defender's position, he was often seen as a factor of uncertainty and he was “feared” to occasionally test his playful accents in his own penalty area. He made 77 appearances for Everton and scored his only goal in the title year. The level in English top division football seemed a bit too high for him and so he moved on to West London in November 1963 for Brentford FC , which had recently been promoted from the fourth division.

A total of four and a half years spent Thomson in Brentford and completed in this time 162 league games, where he had to accept relegation to the fourth division in 1966 before he ended his professional career at the end of the 1967/68 season.
