Georges Picard (painter)
Georges-Gabriel Picard or Georges Picard (born December 23, 1857 in Remiremont , Département Vosges , † 1943 in Yzeures-sur-Creuse , Département Indre-et-Loire ) was a French painter , decorator and illustrator .
Life
Georges Picard, the son of Abraham Picard and his wife Rosalie, née Gougenheimer, came from an assimilated Jewish family. He spent his school days at the Lycée Charlemagne in Paris . From 1877 he studied at the École des beaux-arts , where he was a student of Jean-Léon Gérôme for two years . In 1885 and 1887 he stayed in the United States of America. From 1891 to 1898 he carried out wall paintings for the Galerie Lobau of the Hôtel de ville de Paris .
As a member of the administrative commission of the École des beaux-arts, he campaigned for the work of his friend René Lalique on the occasion of the exhibition in 1895. Lalique later introduced him to the photographer Paul Haviland , the son of the American owner of the Haviland & Co. porcelain factory in Limoges , Charles Edward Haviland. Paul Haviland had married Lalique's daughter, Suzanne , in 1917 . In 1925, Georges Picard and his wife Camille were invited to Paul Haviland's estate in Yzeures-sur-Creuse for the first time . Further visits followed.
Picard's wife Camille died in 1938. During the invasion in the Second World War in 1940 was Georges Picard from his home in Obernai in Alsace expelled. Like other Jewish families, he was deported to Lyon . He lived alone and under poor circumstances in the Hôtel Regina, where his friend Paul Haviland visited him in 1941, took him to Yzeures and hid him there. Picard died of a heart attack in 1943. Haviland ensured that Picard was buried with perpetual right of rest in the cemetery of Yzeures-sur-Creuse and was awarded the “Médaille des Justes parmi les Nations” ( Righteous Among the Nations ) of the State of Israel posthumously in 2007 .
In early 2012, the gallery owner and publisher Serge Aboukrat donated Picard's estate of letters and other papers to the Mémorial de la Shoah , a museum and documentation center of the Holocaust in Paris. The collection was put together by the Haviland's daughter, Nicole Maritch-Haviland.
