Thomas Gerald Reames Davies CBE (* 7. February 1945 in Llansaint , Carmarthenshire ) is a former Welsh rugby union player , who in positions outside three quarters and indoor three-quarter played.
Davies made his national team debut in 1966 against Australia as an inner three-quarters. In 1968 he was first invited to tour the British and Irish Lions . He was used in a game before he was injured and had to travel home.
A key moment in Gerald Davies' career came in 1969 on a Welsh tour to Australia and New Zealand . The outside three quarters had injured himself, so he had to help out in this position. He tried against Australia and played as an outside three-quarters until the end of his career.
In 1971 Davies made the decisive attempt in the last minute of the Five Nations game against the Scottish national team . At the end of the tournament , the Welsh won the Grand Slam . In the same year he also did his second Lions tour. The Lions team at that time is considered to be one of the strongest in history and was the only selection so far to win a series against New Zealand .
In 1978 Davies ended his career. He has made a total of 20 attempts and is one of the most famous rugby players of his time. In 2009 he was team manager on the British and Irish Lions Tour to South Africa .
Davies was awarded the Order of Commander of the British Empire for his athletic achievements and his commitment to the advancement of children and youth. He works as an expert for the BBC and The Times and was chairman of the Wales Youth Agency. He received honorary Stipendiate at the Universities in Lampeter , Aberystwyth and Cardiff . In 1999 he was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame .
