Gerhard Klammet (1954)

Gerhard Klammet (born July 13, 1914 in Saalhausen / Wstf. , † April 7, 1990 in Murnau am Staffelsee ) was a German photographer and documentary filmmaker .

Life

Parental home and school time

Gerhard Klammet, the son of an inventor, had his first contact with photography through his mother Martha as a child. Even during his school days in Helmbrechts (Upper Franconia), he was also interested in flora and fauna (especially ornithology ), the main motives of his later professional activity.

Vocational training

Based on his interests, Klammet began an apprenticeship as a photographer in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1932 after moving to the Bavarian Alpine foothills , which he completed with the title of master. Until the beginning of the war, he worked on setting up and managing a scientific image and film archive for the Garmisch-Partenkirchen bird sanctuary.

Center of life

His adopted home, first in Murnau am Staffelsee and Garmisch-Partenkirchen and from 1956 in Ohlstadt , offered Gerhard Klammet a rich field of activity as a mountaineer, hiker and photographer. He was a member of the mountain rescue service and the Garmisch-Partenkirchen section of the German Alpine Club , as well as the Bund Naturschutz .

Cultural film production and lecture series

From 1946 onwards, he set up his own cultural film production. In a series of lectures, Klammet reported on the experiences of his travels, which led him as a cameraman and photographer to Egypt, Kenya and the high regions of the Himalayas, among others.

Himalayan expedition

In 1954, Gerhard Klammet took part as a cameraman on the Himalayan expedition Broad Peak under the direction of Karl Herrligkoffer .

The German Himalaya Expedition was seen as a national event in 1954 and was under the patronage of Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and the honorary protectorate of Crown Prince Rupprecht . The expedition, which started on August 9, 1954 at Munich Central Station, began in Skardu and was accompanied by 350 porters and dozens of animals. The goal set by Herrligkoffer of reaching the 8,051 m high summit of Brod Peak was not achieved due to minus temperatures of 33 degrees and ice avalanches. The twelve-person expedition team (Karl Herrligkoffer (expedition leader), Michael Anderl, Albert Bitterling , Joachim Fischer, Günter Hauser , Gerhard Klammet, Hermann Köllensperger, Sepp Maag, Rudolf Marek, Toni Messner, Kuno Rainer, Ernst Senn) returned unharmed on May 22nd. December 1954.

The documentary film The Shining Mountain , shot by Klammet as part of this trip , was not shown in the cinemas due to the lack of success at the summit. This expedition should not be confused with the expedition that took place in the same year, albeit in spring and summer, under the direction of Mathias Rebitsch , which provided the basis for the award-winning documentary film Im Schatten des Karakoram .

photography

Gerhard Klammet created an extensive image archive with a focus on nature and landscape photographs. From 1960, recordings with large format cameras (13x18) were added for calendar and book productions , later aerial photographs followed. His second-born daughter Waltraud, who also became a photographer, expanded this archive through her activities.
