Gerhard Philipp Scholvin (born October 29, 1723 in Thedinghausen ; † September 17, 1803 in Hanover ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian , patron and author .

Life

Gerhard Philipp Scholvin was born the son of a bailiff . From 1755 he took the office of pastor at the Kreuzkirche in Hanover and, as a “senior”, was the leading clergyman of all Lutheran parishes in the old town.

Promotion of orphans

In 1799 Scholvin wrote in his will :

“For more than 40 years [...] I have noticed that the children of the local Waysenhauses, for lack of the opportunity to do handicrafts , get used to indolence in front of others. Therefore, when they are apprenticed to craftsmen or in service, they rarely hit . If they endure their apprenticeship years, they often end up on foreign military service while traveling , for which they were not brought up in their homeland. "

Such orphaned children (of the old town), who had not been given early “opportunities” to practice work, were set up by Scholvin as main heirs in his will. But the previous education in the poor and orphanage had not convinced him - Scholvin wanted to promote differently :

"Therefore I demand that boys and girls of my money be given to the surrounding proper country households for boarding and instruction in the manner of the Moringian orphanage ."

In 1803, around 80,000 Reichstaler flowed from Scholvin's legacy to the Scholvin Foundation, which was then named after the pastor, and finally more than 100,000 Taler.
