Gerhard Philipp von Closter (also: Gerhard Philipp von Clooster) (born March 3, 1771 in Norden , † December 23, 1848 in Prenzlau ) was a Prussian colonel .

Gerhard Philipp von Closter came from an ancient nobility. The family belonged to the local nobility and owned the Langhaus estate in the Westermarsch in East Frisia . She came to East Frisia about two hundred years ago from the province of Drenthe in the Netherlands .

His father Gerhard Sigismund von Closter (born September 21, 1717 in Dornum ; † March 17, 1776 ibid) was Drost in Emden . His mother was Sophie Juliane Elisabeth Kalkreuth (* February 17, 1737 in Schwedt / Oder ; † June 29, 1823 in Norden). He had two brothers, of whom Ernst Moritz von Closter (* April 2, 1755 - † October 4, 1815), President of the East Frisian Landscape and Haro Siegmund von Closter (* 1768; † unknown), who on April 17 Matriculated in Halle (Saale) in 1788 .

In 1678 the von Closter family had bought the noble long house in the Westermarsch near Norden. This was more about the political rights attached to it than the house, which was unsightly. The von Closter family lived mainly in Emden.

Career

The upbringing of Gerhard Philipp von Closter, which was mainly carried out in Emden by his mother, showed his inclination towards both military service and painting at an early age.

In 1786 Closter went to the Brunswick court as a page and in 1788 came as a junker in Halberstadt to the regiment of Duke Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand of the Prussian army . In 1790 he was promoted to officer and Closter took part in the campaigns during the First Coalition War from 1792 to 1794. In 1803 he was promoted to prime lieutenant. After Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand was fatally wounded in the battle of Jena and Auerstedt in 1806 , Closter said goodbye to the army and then lived from painting in various places. Of him was 1809 character as captain awarded.

In 1811 his application was accepted by the Pomeranian gendarmerie and he was employed there. In 1815, during the Wars of Liberation , Closter received the Iron Cross First Class and the Order of Saint Anne for his proven bravery as major and commander of the Kurmärkische Landwehr Regiment because of his deeds in the Battle of Ligny . In 1816 he was promoted to commander of the 1st Potsdam Landwehr Regiment and two years later he was promoted to lieutenant colonel .

Originally he was to receive a reward according to a cabinet order of September 22, 1805. However, due to the unfortunate outcome of the battle in 1806, in which Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand died, he lost the benefit of this reward. King Friedrich Wilhelm III. decreed on September 9, 1824 in a cabinet order that Closter should receive an annual payment from January 1, 1818 as remuneration for services rendered and work (paintings).

1824 Closter was due to a Fußleidens the disposition made and received in 1833 the character as a colonel. As such, he took his final leave of the military in 1844.

In his retirement he only dealt with artistic work and created works in the art of copperplate engraving, portraits in various painting techniques and landscape paintings; he also taught penniless artists.

Closter was married, but his wife died before him, as did his only son. His daughter married Major Knospe, the leader of the Uckermärkische Landwehr in Prenzlau.

With the death of Gerhard Philipp von Closter, the male line of the family died out.
