Gerhard Ritter (political scientist)

Gerhard Friedrich Ritter (born November 23, 1915 in Mohrungen , East Prussia ; † June 3, 2013 in Gerbrunn ) was a German political scientist . He was a professor at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg .

Life

Ritter came from a liberal-conservative family. He was a member of the Bündische Jugend and, after graduating from high school, initially trained in agriculture. This was followed by the Reich Labor Service and military service in the Wehrmacht . He served as an officer in World War II .

From 1945 to 1950 he studied German (with Hermann August Korff and Theodor Frings ) and Russian at the University of Leipzig and history (with Ernst Hohl and Heinrich Sproemberg ) and Slavic (with Edmund Schneeweis ) at the University of Rostock . He passed the state examination for higher education and went to West Berlin in 1952. From 1952 to 1956 he studied political science (with Ernst Fraenkel ) at the German School of Politics . After his exams and diploma, he switched to the Eastern European Institute in Berlin for graduate studies . He then worked as a research assistant at Hans-Joachim Lieber . In 1965 he was at the Philosophical Faculty of the Free University of Berlin with a thesis on the community model and the establishment of the Red Army in 1918 to Dr. phil. PhD.

Then he was employed at the chair of Friedrich August von der Heydte at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . In 1971 he completed his habilitation at the Faculty of Law with the thesis The Russian Institute of Commissioners in the Kerensky Ara May-November 1917 . In 1971 he became a university lecturer, in 1974 head of department and in 1978 professor of political science at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg. In 1981 he retired. His academic students included a. Karl-Heinz Frieser and Gottfried Freiherr von der Heydte .
