Gerhard Schneider (Bishop)

Gerhard Schneider (born January 22, 1969 in Ulm ) is a German clergyman and Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in Rottenburg-Stuttgart .

Life

After completing his school career, Gerhard Schneider began studying business administration at the Deutsche Bundesbank , where he worked for several years after completing his studies in Frankfurt am Main and Athens .

After he decided to pursue a priestly career, he began studying Catholic theology in 1995 in the Wilhelmsstift Theological Convict in Tübingen and in Rome . In 2001 he became Bishop Gebhard Fürst of deacon ordained. In his diaconate year he worked in Munderkingen on the Danube . Subsequently, on July 6, 2002, he received the sacrament of ordination . He spent the first part of his vicariate in the Lower Brenz Valley pastoral care unit before he was a repetiteur at the Tübingen Wilhelmsstift from 2004 to 2009 . During this time he did his doctorate with Ottmar Fuchs in the field of practical theology .

After his time as a repetitionist, he worked as director of the theological-propaedeutic seminar Ambrosianum in Tübingen and as head of the papal work for spiritual professions of the church. With effect from August 1, 2017, Bishop Gebhard Fürst appointed him head of the newly structured main department VIIIa (liturgy, art and church music with vocational pastoral work) of the diocese, after which he handed over his position as head of the Ambrosianum to Jörg Kohr .

On April 16, 2019 Pope appointed him Francis to the titular of Abbir Germaniciana and Auxiliary Bishop of Rottenburg-Stuttgart, on July 13, 2019 he was ordained in the Co-Cathedral of St. Eberhard by Bishop Gebhard Fürst bishop. Co- consecrators were the Metropolitan of the Upper Rhine Church Province, Archbishop Stephan Burger from Freiburg , and Auxiliary Bishop Udo Bentz from Mainz . For the time being, he will retain his duties in Department VIIIa of the diocese. With effect from July 1, 2019, he was appointed a member of the Rottenburg Cathedral Chapter by Bishop Gebhard Fürst .

Motto

Schneider's motto is: Gaudium domini fortitudo nostra - The joy of the Lord is our strength ( Neh 8, 10). When translating the motto, which on the basis of the Hebrew testimony in the standard translation is translated as “The joy of the Lord is your strength”, Schneider refers to the contrary translation in the Latin Vulgate .
