Gerhard Thiedemann

Gerhard Thiedemann (born October 14, 1955 in Hamburg ) is a German diplomat and was ambassador to New Zealand from July 2016 until his retirement in July 2019 .

Life

Thiedemann put 1973 on Walddörfer-Gymnasium in Hamburg-Volksdorf his High School along with Ole von Beust and studied afterwards with this common law and economics . After completing his studies, he did a legal preparatory service and worked as a lawyer from 1980 to 1983. In 1984 he became an employee at the Federal Ministry for Youth, Family and Health and in 1987 moved to the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development .

In 1991 he switched to the Foreign Service and initially worked at the embassy in Bangladesh until 1993 . This was followed by assignments in the Federal Foreign Office (1993 to 1996; 1999 to 2003 as deputy head of unit and 2006 to 2010 as head of unit) and at the embassies in the USA (1986) and Egypt (1996 to 1999).

Between 2003 and 2006 he worked as the head of the cultural department at the embassy in Japan and during this time he helped organize a visit by Ole von Beust, who was first mayor of Hamburg at the time and, as such, was responsible for local foreign policy Hanseatic city in Japan and South Korea promoted. After returning to Germany, he served as Senior Legation Counselor First Class Head of the principles for and coordination of development policies , implementing organizations, multilateral development banks, OECD ( DAC ) and EU competent Referates 401 in the Foreign Office.

From July 2010 to 2013, Gerhard Thiedemann succeeded Thomas Schäfer , who in turn became Ambassador to Guatemala , Ambassador to North Korea . He gave several lectures on the experiences he gained there, for example on what he saw as the “structural food shortage”.

This was followed by a three-year term as head of the German embassy in Mongolia .

Gerhard Thiedemann was Ambassador to New Zealand from July 2016 to July 2019 . In addition to New Zealand, the Cook Islands , Fiji , Kiribati , Niue , Samoa , Tonga and Tuvalu also belonged to his district .

After his retirement, Thiedemann moved back to Hamburg-Volksdorf, where he grew up.
