Gernot Langes-Swarovski

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gernot Langes-Swarovski (born October 13, 1943 in Wattens , Tyrol ) is an Austrian entrepreneur . The great-grandson of the company's founder Daniel Swarovski was managing partner of the Tyrolean group D. Swarovski for 35 years and is the largest single shareholder with 17%.

Careers at Swarovski

Gernot Langes-Swarovski joined the family company, which had existed since 1895, in the mid-1960s as a limited partner and managing director.

In 1974, when Swarovski had to struggle with a drastic drop in sales following the oil price shock in the wake of the general economic weakness, he took over the management of the family company with around two hundred family members together with Christian Schwemberger-Swarovski and the brothers Helmut and Gerhard Swarovski.

In 1978 he and Christian Schwemberger-Swarovski bought Aircraft Innsbruck , later Tyrolean Airways , which is now part of the Austrian Airlines Group . Today's Tyrolean Jet Services was spun off from this company and has been solely owned by Swarovski since 1988.

In 1979, the production of Swarovski crystal glass figures began .

In 1987, when he took over the thousands of retail outlets in the US jewelry chain Zale in partnership with the Canadian company Peoples Jewelery, he brought Swarovski into great economic difficulties. In 1991 the US subsidiary had to file for bankruptcy with a debt equivalent to EUR 1.1 billion. The resulting losses - allegedly around 150 million euros - burdened the consolidated balance sheets for many years.

In 1995 the Museum Kristallwelten was opened in Wattens .

In 2002 he handed over his functions in the group - sales and marketing - to his son Markus . At the time of his departure, the group had a turnover of 1.7 billion euros per year and around 14,000 employees worldwide.

He is one of six living bearers of the Ring des Landes Tirol (2007).
