Gethsemane is a district of the market town of Philippsthal (Werra) in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in East Hesse .

geography

The village is located northwest of Philippsthal between the last foothills of the Rhön and the Werra valley . Federal highway 62 runs north of Gethsemane .

history

The site was initially in 1699 by Heimboldshausen -down Huguenots with the permission of para-alloy Landgrave Philipp of Hessen-Philippsthal in its territory, the Bailiwick Kreuzberg founded (Philippsthal). The church and the cemetery of this community are first recorded in 1710. In the local dialect of the place name was in many variations verballhornisiert : Kätzmiß, Kätzmis, Gözeman, Getzmann, Götzmann and Getzemich.

On August 1, 1972, as part of the regional reform in Hesse, the previously independent municipality of Gethsemane was merged with five other locations to form the new municipality of Philippstal.
