Geusau is the name of a Thuringian noble family. It comes from the place Geusa in the Geiseltal , which was first mentioned in the Hersfeld tithe list as Husuwa and in 975 as villa Gusau in pago hassaga . The family name Geusau, Geusa, Gusau stands in Low German for Gänse-Aue or Wendish as huss or guss for goose.

history

The family first appears in a document in 1116 with Gerlach von Geysaha . In 1291 Ulricus de Gusowe and in 1298 the brothers Ulrich, Heinrich and Günther, sons of the quondam Hermanni militis de Gusowe, are mentioned as imperial vassals. The unbroken line of trunks begins with Hans von Gusewe, who appears as a witness at the Schöppengericht in Hettstedt in 1423.

The family's estates were Vitzenburg (until 1451), Heygendorf and Schafsdorf bei Allstedt (1451), Leimbach , Farnstädt (since 1475), Ritteburg (1573), Kutzleben (1544), Gößnitz bei Eckartsberga (1544). In the church “St. Johannes Evangelist und Paulus ”in Oberfarnstädt contains several family tombstones (1557–1603), some with coats of arms, and in that of Gößnitz there is the grave slab of the knight Anton von Geusau († 1577). The Thuringian line of the family probably expired in the 19th century.

Dutch nobility

The ancestor of the Dutch line was Justus von Geusau (* 1729 in Jena -1784), lieutenant colonel in the Guards Regiment Oranje-Friesland and in 1769 gecommitteerde to parliament . In the Netherlands the family was divided into three branches. In addition to the Von Geusau branch, there were two more. Jonkheer Willem Arnold von Geusau (1836–1885) founded the Alting von Geusau family branch when he added the name of his great-grandmother Willemina Hendrina von Geusau-Alting (1763–1792) to his. The third branch goes back to Jonkheer Gillis von Geusau (1878–1931), who took the gender name Valckenier from his mother Jetske von Geusau-Valckenier (1850–1934) and thus established the family of the Valckenier von Geusau .

During the 19th century, two family members and their legal descent were introduced into the new Dutch nobility:

  • In 1816 Willem Arnold Alting Lamoraal of Geusau was (1783-1855), the nobility Jonkheer awarded. His son Jhr. Mr. Chrétien Pierre Gerard von Geusau (1809-1882) was accepted into the Limburg knighthood in 1842 . Whose son Jhr. Mr. Gerard Theodoor Lamoraal van Geusau (1857-1906) was awarded the title of baron for the firstborn in 1890 . In 1906 this title expired with his death. The brothers Jhr. Adriaan von Geusau (1867–1944) and Jhr. Pieter Gerhard Christiaan von Geusau (1884–1947) became the progenitors of two branches of the South African family.
  • In 1828 Justus Jan Albertus Lamoraal von Geusau was transferred to the status of Jonkheer.

Austrian nobility

Another family branch exists in Austria. Carl von Geusau was introduced into the nobility of Lower Austria and Bohemia as a baron in 1815 and 1818 respectively .

Descendants live in Wels and Puchberg near Wels, here in Upper Austria there is also an old manor.

coat of arms

Blazon : The family coat of arms shows in blue a silver goose with a red beak and feet ready to fight ; on the blue-silver bulged or crowned helmet a standing or sitting goose in front of three green cock feathers or reed leaves; the helmet covers are blue and silver.

The motto : "Non soli cedit" (German: "He does not give way to the sun").

Symbolism: The family has a talking coat of arms . The von Geusau are probably related to the tribal and coat of arms of the von Dieskau and to the coat of arms related to the von Gans and the Gans zu Putlitz .
