Giannis Dragasakis ( Greek Γιάννης Δραγασάκης , born January 1, 1947 in Anatoliki Lasithi , Crete ) is a Greek economist and politician. He was Deputy Prime Minister in the Alexis Tsipras I cabinet from January 27, 2015 to August 28, 2015 and was again in the Alexis Tsipras II cabinet from September 23, 2015 to July 8, 2019.

Political career

Dragasakis was already involved as a student in the Lambrakis youth . He studied economics in Greece and at the London School of Economics . Even as a student he was politically active against the Greek military dictatorship , for example as the secretary of the Greek students in London . Until 1991 he was a leading member of the Communist Party , since its inception he has belonged to the left Synaspismos . In the elections in June 1989 he was given a parliamentary mandate for the first time. From November 1989 to April 1990 he was Deputy Minister of Economics in the coalition government of Xenophon Zolota . In the parliamentary elections in 1996 , 2004 , 2007 , May 2012 , June 2012 and January 2015 , he was re-elected as a member of the Synaspismos and since 2004 of the SYRIZA . From 2012 to 2015 he was Deputy Speaker of Parliament .

Dragasakis is a member of the Syriza executive committee and is considered to be its leading economic politician. He is a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and chairman of the sub-committee for the European Social Charter .

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras appointed Dragasakis to his government as Deputy Prime Minister on January 27, 2015. As Deputy Prime Minister Dragasakis oversees the entire finance and economy sector.
