Panagiotis Kouroumblis ( Greek Παναγιώτης Κουρουμπλής , born October 2, 1951 in Matsouki , Aetolia-Acarnania ) is a Greek politician . He was Minister of Health in the government of Alexis Tsipras from January 27, 2015 to August 28, 2015 . On September 23, 2015, Tsipras appointed him to his second cabinet as Interior Minister. He was the first blind minister and is the first blind MP in Greece.

Life

Kouroumblis comes from a family of Pontic Greeks who fled to Greece from the Black Sea coast . At the age of 10 he lost his eyesight in the explosion of a German grenade from World War II . He did his doctorate in social sciences and worked as a lawyer.

His political engagement began when he was a student. During the 1970s he initiated a movement for the disabled in Greece, which aims to integrate disabled people into society. He is a founding member of the World Blind Union and the European Blind Union and founder of the National Association of People with Disabilities. Between 1993 and 1996 he was Secretary General for Welfare in the Ministry of Health with responsibility for child protection, care of the elderly and people with disabilities.

Kouroumblis was elected in 1996, 2000 and 2009 for the social democratic PASOK as a deputy from Etoloakarnania in the Greek parliament . In June 2011 he voted against the legislative package introduced by then Prime Minister Papandreou to implement the austerity policy and was therefore excluded from the PASOK parliamentary group. He then turned to the left Syriza , for which he was re-elected in the June 2012 and January 2015 elections.

His ministry was named Ministry of Health and Social Security.
