Gigant ( Russian Гига́нт ) is a settlement (possjolok) in the Rostov Oblast in Russia with 10,249 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The place is located in the steppe area of the Caucasus foreland about 150 km as the crow flies southeast of the administrative center of Rostov-on-Don .

Giant belongs to Rajon Salski and is located 15 km west-northwest of the administrative center Salsk . The settlement is the seat of the rural community Gigantovskoye selskoye posselenije, which also includes the 15 settlements of Agarensky, Chlebny, Glubokaya Balka, Jassenewo, Klyony, Kuznetsovsky, Logvinovsky, Nizhnejaninsky, Pravoyulovsky, Prirechyoknyy and Sejatscha, Zagorje, Niševskyi together belong to over 5000 inhabitants, who are up to 20 km away (Kuznetsovsky, north).

history

The settlement arose from June 1928 in 1915 the railway line Rostov-on-Don - Salsk opened station Trubezkaja, as in the field order of the Central Committee of the VKP (B) a first model state farm with the aim of significantly increasing the grain production of the Soviet Union was , along with about ten others in other parts of the country later that year. It was initially called Sowchos Nr. 1, from November 1928 Gigant, and its administration was in Zelina, 25 km to the west . In 1930 the administration was relocated to the more centrally located settlement at the Trubetskaya train station, which on February 10, 1933 also received the name Gigant and the status of an urban-type settlement . In 1934, the now 260,000 hectare sovkhos were divided into four independent operations based in Gigant, Zelina, Salsk and Julowski .

During the Second World War , Gigant was occupied by the German Wehrmacht from late July 1942 to early 1943 . Since 2004 the place has had the status of a rural settlement again.

Gigant is located at kilometer 159 of the Rostov-on-Don - Salsk railway line ( Trubetskaya station ). The regional road 60K-3 (formerly R270), which connects Yegorlykskaya on 60K-1 (formerly R269) Rostov - Stavropol with Salsk on 60K-2 Pestschanokopskoje  - Kotelnikowo ( Volgograd Oblast ) runs through the settlement .
