Gilberto Fernández

Gilberto Fernández (born February 13, 1935 in Havana , † September 30, 2011 in Miami ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in Miami , who came from Cuba .

Life

Gilberto Fernández came from a family with eight children, with four of the five boys becoming priests and the three sisters becoming a nun. He received on 17 May 1959 Cuban Havana by Manuel Cardinal Arteaga y Betancourt the priesthood and was in the Archdiocese of San Cristobal de la Habana incardinated. He worked in four parishes, most recently as administrator at the Catedral de San Cristóbal . The situation for the Catholic Church worsened with the Cuban Revolution . In particular, priests were persecuted and imprisoned, including Fernández. In July 1967 he fled to Miami , Florida, and was incardinated there in the clergy of the Archdiocese of Miami . He initially looked after Mexican immigrants in South Florida. 1978/79 he was pastor of the Sacred Heart in Homestead and from 1979/88 in Sts. Peter and Paul in Miami. In 1988/89 he was an administrator at San Pablo in Marathon in the Florida Keys . 1989/96 he was pastor of St. Kevin in Miami. In 1996 he became spiritual at St. John Vianney Seminary on Southwest 87th Avenue in Miami.

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Hirina on June 23, 1997 and appointed him auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Miami . The episcopal ordination donated him the Archbishop of Miami, John Clement Favalora , on September 3, 1997; Co-consecrators were Edward Anthony McCarthy , Senior Archbishop of Miami, and Agustín Román , Auxiliary Bishop of Miami. His episcopal motto was "amor ultima ratio" (love is the highest reason).

On December 10, 2002, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation due to health issues.
