Gilman Exposto dos Santos
Gilman Ascenção Exposto dos Santos (born July 4, 1956 in Fatubessi , Ermera , Portuguese Timor ; † November 25, 2019 in Dili , East Timor ) was an East Timorese politician of the União Democrática Timorense (UDT).
Career
Santos attended a course for electricians at Escola Técnica.
Father and brother of Santos were killed in the civil war against FRETILIN in 1975 in Aifu . After the lost war, the UDT temporarily sided with the Indonesian invaders. Santos was an employee of the Indonesian government in annexed East Timor from 1977 to 1979, then an employee of the CRC and from 1987 to 2012 of the Yayasan ETADEP (East Timor Agriculture and Development Project Foundation). Santos was the husband of Armandina Maria Gusmão dos Santos , the sister of Xanana Gusmão , the leader of the armed resistance against the occupation of East Timor by the Indonesians. When he was captured in 1992, Santos, his wife and two of their children (13 and 15 years old) were also temporarily detained by the Kopassus . At that time Santos was an employee of a Catholic aid organization and his wife Armandina was the private secretary of the Indonesian governor Mário Viegas Carrascalão . Of all of Xanana Gusmão's relatives, she was in prison the longest. Here she was tortured several times by Kopassus soldiers.
In 2003 Santos co-founded the Academia de Café de Timor-Leste . From 2014 to 2018 Santos worked for the GAS company. Nilton Gusmão dos Santos is a successful entrepreneur and president of the Liga Futebol Amadora .
Since February 2010 Santos has been President of the UDT and thus successor to João Viegas Carrascalão . In the parliamentary elections in East Timor in 2012 and 2017 , Santos led the UDT party list, but it failed because of the three and four percent hurdles. In the early elections in 2018 , the UDT ran together with other parties in the alliance Frenti Dezenvolvimentu Demokratieiku (FDD). This time Santos made it into parliament in second place on the FDD list . The alliance of the FDD broke up on June 17th, so that Santos now sat as a sole member of parliament. He was a member of the parliamentary commissions for constitutional issues and justice (commission A) and for infrastructure (commission E).
On November 25, 2019 Santos died in the Hospital Nacional Guido Valadares in the state capital Dili .
