Giovanni Aldobrandini (* 1525 in Fano , Italy ; † September 7, 1573 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Giovanni Aldobrandini, who came from the Florentine noble family of the Aldobrandini , studied theology at the University of Salamanca. He then became the canon of Salamanca and chaplain to Prince Don Juan.

He was called on August 26, 1569 to be Bishop of Imola . He was ordained bishop on December 8, 1569 in his house chapel by Cardinal Scipione Rebiba ; Co- consecrators were Giulio Antonio Santorio , Archbishop of Santa Severina , and Felice Peretti Montalto OFMConv , Bishop of Sant'Agata de 'Goti .

Pope Pius V created Aldobrandini as a cardinal priest on May 17, 1570 , the cardinal's hat and the titular church of Sant'Eufemia were bestowed on him on June 9, 1570. On November 20, 1570 he moved to the titular church of San Simeone Profeta . On December 14, 1572, he succeeded Charles Borromeo as cardinal major penitentiary of the Roman Curia , a position he held until his death.

Giovanni Aldobrandini died in Rome in 1573 and was buried in the "Aldobrandini Chapel" of the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva .

Family relationships

Pope Clement VIII was his brother, he was also related to the cardinals Pietro Aldobrandini (1593), Cinzio Passeri Aldobrandini (1593), Silvestro Aldobrandini (1603) and Ippolito Aldobrandini the Younger (1621).
