Giovanni Andrea Scartazzini (born December 30, 1837 in Bondo GR ; † February 10, 1901 in Fahrwangen ) was a Swiss Reformed clergyman .

Life

Giovanni Andrea Scartazzini was born on December 30, 1837 in Bondo in the canton of Graubünden as the son of Bartolomeo Scartazzini and his wife Clara Picenoni. In 1856 he was accepted into the Basel Mission House and from 1863 to 1865 he studied theology . He received his ordination in Bern on July 11th of this year . In the same year he took over a pastor's office in Twann , in 1867 he became a pastor in Abländschen . Two years later he moved to Melchnau and in 1871 went to Chur to become a teacher of Italian at the Bündner Kantonsschule . In 1874 he became headmaster of a private school in Walzenhausen , but the following year he went to Soglio GR as a pastor . It was not until July 3, 1876 that the Evangelical-Rhaetian Synod accepted him in Chur . This was a prerequisite for assuming a pastor's office in the Free State of the Three Leagues , but on the other hand Scartazzini had already been ordained. The people in Soglio did not agree with their new pastor. As a result, he left the community in 1884 and moved to Fahrwangen / Meisterschwanden . He held the parish office until his death on February 10, 1901 at the age of 63.

Scartazzini made a special name for himself as a Dante researcher ; he is one of the most important Dante researchers of the 19th century and his work in this regard is still important today. He also had a large Dante library.
