Giovanni Arpino
Giovanni Arpino (born January 27, 1927 in Pula ( Istria ), † December 10, 1987 in Turin ) was an Italian writer and journalist .
life and work
The son of a Neapolitan father and a Piedmontese mother, Giovanni Arpino spent his childhood in several places in northern Italy, as his father Tommaso's career as an officer forced the family to move frequently. It was not until 1943 that the family found their final domicile in Bra , in the parent house of their mother Maddalena Berzia. In Bra, Arpino graduated from high school, before he devoted himself to law and then to literature.
In 1951 he completed his studies with a thesis on Sergei Alexandrowitsch Jessenin , while in 1952 he was able to inspire Elio Vittorini for his novel Sei stato felice, Giovanni , so that it was published by Einaudi . In 1953 he married Caterina Brero and moved with her to Turin , where he found a job with Einaudi and stayed until the end of his life.
In addition to his literary and publishing activities, he mainly worked as a sports journalist for La Stampa and Il Giornale . Together with Gianni Brera , he succeeded in improving the quality of sports reporting in Italy and giving it a literary level. With Azzurro tenebra (1977) Arpino even wrote a football novel , his most important work in this own genre.
Arpino's rather dry and ironic novels were honored with several prizes: in 1964 he received the Premio Strega for L'ombra delle colline , in 1972 the Premio Campiello for Randagio è l'eroe and in 1980 the Premio Super Campiello for Il fratello italiano . He also wrote numerous dramas, stories and poems for children ( Le mille e una Italia, among others). It is thanks to him that the Argentine writer Osvaldo Soriano became known in Italy.
After his death in 1987, Arpino Bra, the city of his youth, remained connected in a special way: there a cultural center and a children's literature award are dedicated to him in his honor.
